So you have a collection of amazing skincare products, but how on earth are you meant to use them? What goes on first, and when? Here’s a simple guide to help you on your way.
How to apply and layer skincare products
How do I layer skincare products, and why does it matter?
The idea behind layering your skincare products in a particular order is to allow the most effective absorption of active ingredients.
A good rule of thumb is to layer products from lightest to heaviest, and water-based products before oil-based products. Toners, essences, serums and lotions tend to be water-based. Some moisturisers and creams are water-based, while some are oil-based. Oils are oil-based.
When should I use which ingredient?
It’s best to apply antioxidants in the morning, as they can help protect your cells from ultraviolet light and other environmental damage you may be exposed to during the day. Ingredients that can cause sun sensitivity (such as retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids and hydroquinone) are best applied at night.
Morning: antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E and ferulic acid
Evening: retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids, hydroquinone
Morning or evening: niacinamide, salicylic acid, azelaic acid
