Dermal fillers are substances that are injected into the skin to create volume, add shape and reduce the appearance of certain wrinkles.
Dermal fillers can be used to:
- Enhance the shape and size of the lips
- Reduce dark circles and hollowing underneath the eyes
- Restore volume to the temples and forehead, and lift the eyebrows
- Enhance the cheek bones
- Smooth deep lines around the nose, mouth and chin such as the nasolabial folds and marionette lines
- Add volume to a recessed chin
- Treat certain types of acne scars
- Restore volume to the backs of the hands
Swelling and bruising can occur immediately after treatment, and it may take up to two weeks to settle and for the results to be obvious. Depending on the filler used, the results may last for between six months and two years. Permanent fillers are available, but are rarely used. Certain types of filler can be dissolved with an injection, if required. It’s essential to have treatment with dermal fillers performed by a qualified and experienced practitioner, as serious side effects can occur.
