Phthalates are a group of hundreds of chemicals used in a wide range of products, including toys, food packaging and medical equipment, as well as personal care products including nail polish, hairspray, fragrances, moisturisers, soaps and shampoos. Some phthalates are not approved for use in personal care products, but the use of certain phthalates has been reviewed and deemed safe by many organisations, including the United States Food and Drug Administration and the European Scientific Commission on Consumer Products. Some people choose to limit or avoid exposure to phthalates in skincare, in which case there are numerous options available, with many large brands avoiding phthalates completely.
